Y blocks are a little different with the pump external to the pan. Is it possible to replace the innards without removing the whole shootin' match?? I can get a Melling kit locally for cheap compared to a new one.

 

The Melling kit will be for the gerotor pump (aluminum housing, flat cover). If you have one of those, then yes, you can replace the rotors while leaving the pump on the engine. However, to do it properly, clean the pump check for wear and check clearances will be just about impossible.

I wouldn't replace them without reason, though. Are you having a problem with the pump?

 

No, but I really don't have any confidence that it isn't high mileage. Thought maybe with new parts it would give a little peace of mind for little money.
