Eaton Fuller 9 speed road ranger question.

I’ve been gathering info of all the major components of this L8000 I bought. With regards to the transmission, the sticker on the sun visor says it’s a 9 speed. When shifting it out on the road, there are 8 standard forward gears, plus the low gear. So, I know it’s a 9 speed. But when I crawled underneath and found the tag, it shows the model as “RT6610” which is a 10 speed. Because of this, I don’t know what model 9 speed it is. Any thoughts? Thanks. John. I’ve included pictures.

The transmission does not match the tag. That is a low torque 10 speed like would be used behind a 3116/3126 Cat, or a 6.6 Ford engine.

It's rated for 600 ft lbs torque. It shifts 5 on the low side, flip button up, repeat same shift pattern for gears 6-10.

The 6610 is a direct drive transmission also. What engine is in your truck?

Try driving it as a 10 speed and see if it is one, or if the tag on the transmission is wrong.

6610 would be about right for a 200HP diesel, if that is what it is.

Post a picture of the transmission if you can.

It definitely only has 9 forward speeds. Unless they count reverse. I Think they only count the forward speeds though.

If you can't flip the selector up and come back across the where low is on your sticker, then it's a 9 speed. But, the tag on the transmission is definitely a 10 speed.

I was thinking that. Its possible that because I think its a 9 speed, Ive been shifting it : Lo 2,3,4,5. Then, Hi 7,8,9,10. I will check if it shifts into what I think is Lo, in high range. Ill let you know tonight. Thanks.

If you're able to shift from low to 1st without the truck almost stopping before going into gear, then you most likely have a 10 speed.

There is such a big ratio difference between low and first in a 9 spd, shifting quickly is all but impossible, while with a 10 spd, 1 to 2 will change just like any other gear.

I just went through all of the gears. It is a10 speed. The tag is correct. I guess at some point, the transmission was changed out. Or, they had to replace the sun visor and could only find one from a 9 speed truck. Lol. Any way, it doesn’t matter I just needed to know what I had. Thanks guys. So, is the RT6610 a decent transmission? This truck will be used to pull a backhoe, which combined with the trailer weighs about 20K.

You will be fine with the weight you're pulling and your engine. The low of a 9 speed is nice, if needed, but with a 10 speed the rpms don't drop near as much between gears, which is nice when the engine is on the weak side.

6610 is fine with a 200HP ish engine, I use the same box with a 6V53 LN8000 only I'm thinking of converting it to a RTO.

Similar to the RT910 915 (with deep reduction) I have changed.
