1989 f250 5.8 no start condition

  • Good morning,

I finished up and oil pump job yesterday and went to turn over the motor and nothing. All my accessories and fuel pump come on just fine. I can start the engine by having the ignition on and jumping the posts on the starter solenoid. I replaced the solenoid, no change. I have searched quite a bit on here and have a few questions.
1- Is there a seperate Starter “relay”?
2- If the motor turns over and starts when jumped could the ICM still be bad?
3- Is there any fuses or fusable links I should be looking at (besides the ones under the drivers side access in the cabin)?

On a good note my oil pressure seems to be good to go now....what a pain of a job though!!

Thanks in advance!

Erich

DO you have power to the trigger wire on the solenoid?

I need to check for power there. What are you thinking? Thanks for the reply.

Sorry, No Crank, unless I have the key in the ON position an then I jump the starter solenoid. I think I have it narrowed down to the ignition switch (the one bolted to the top of the steering column). This based on the fact that I took readings from the trigger wire with the key in the start position and I got 9.6 volts. Although when I jumper straight from the positive side of the battery to the small post on the solenoid which has the trigger wire I only get a click and no start. I did replace the starter solenoid. When I jump between the two big posts on the solenoid it starts. Does the starter have a separate relay? Although like I said when I jump the solenoid it starts so I wouldn’t think it would be anything from the solenoid to the starter. I also put the truck in neutral and tried to start, nothing. Which from what I have read it is not the neutral safety switch if it does not start in neutral. Plan is to replace the ignition switch when I get a chance. Any ideas or brainstorming would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Erich

When you run a wire from the positive post on the battery to that little terminal on the solenoid that the slip on wire hooks to, the engine should spin over, that is basically a good way to test the solenoid. Does your new solenoid by chance have 2 of those terminals?

It is strange that your new solenoid would act like your old one. When you bridge the 2 large terminals on the solenoid, you are completely bypassing the solenoid as well as a lot of other things.

I agree that this is weird. It seems like none of the testing I have done points to one thing specific so I guess I’ll just start throwing parts at it...

There are times when the best solution is just throw parts at it, but in this case. If the engine doesn't spin over when you run a jumper from the positive battery cable to the small terminal on the solenoid, an ignition switch etc. isn't going to solve the problem. You need to get the engine spinning over doing that first. Just trying to save you time and money and frustration.

UPDATE

So, its been a few weeks since I last posted about my no Crank, no Start issue.

I have now replaced both the ignition switch (on top of the steering column) and the neutral safety switch (C6 transmission). I still have the no Crank issue. I can jump the starter solenoid and the truck with turnover and start. The very first thing I replaced was the starter solenoid, I have thought about putting the old one back in and see what happens. Any thoughts? Thanks and Happy new year!

Gotta be a wiring issue, that's why the parts haven't fixed it yet.

Fixed

Turns out it was a bad "new" aftermarket solenoid. I put a Motorcraft Starter solenoid in and she fired right up. So of course now that I have fixed that I need to replace the front crankshaft seal. Anyone have any experience doing this? Thanks for all the help.

Hello guys, can you guys help me where to find the location where you put shift indicator clip for 1989 F150 Bricksnose with a bad shift indicator. I couldn't find where to find to put the cable w/ clip somewhere at the bottom of the column. Pictures will be nice. My Shift indicator PRN(D)D1. I appreciate any help.
