Unhappy Source for Engine Control Module?

1992 Ford F-250 Custom 5.8l - Rebuilt alternator (with bad internal regulator) from N@@@ fried my Engine Control Module. Need to replace it. My preference would be with a used unit. Anyone recommend a source? Is it true the exact same ECM must be used for the truck (which is proving difficult to find)?

Prior to install of rebuilt alternator, the truck was a beast - NEVER had a problem with it. Used only on weekend Home Depot runs. Many thanks for any info.

How have you verified that the ECU is bad?

Same calibration and catch code would be the best practice. It's just a matter of time before somebody asks you to post this info.

If you wish to try your luck with a substitute, make sure the engine size matches and the transmission matches. If it does not and your truck is AT, the E4OD that it will be equipped with will not function. If you use the ECM from an electronically controlled transmission equipped truck with a manual or a C6, your check engine light will not be happy and driveability may suffer.

One other area to watch is which ignition module is used. Black or gray and they must match the ECM. In general, 92 and later have a remote mount module and will be compatible. Earlier models had the module mounted on the distributor and may not be compatible.

Check RockAuto. Just got mine from there and it worked out well.

What is the ID engineering number marked on the original?

If you don't know, what is your trucks Calibration Code?

I know that Rock Auto has remanufactured computers, but you need the exact same one your truck has.
