I bought a 1991 F-150 a few years ago and the filter was on there about that tight when I did the first oil change on it. It ended up looking just like that when I was done with it. I had to make a couple trips to the parts store and finally found a pair of slip-joint wrench pliers with teeth that work really well. On one of the trips to the store, the guy behind the parts counter helpfully told me that I didn't need to put the filter on quite so tight next time. Thanks buddy.

Why thank you Cousin, I'll check it out for sure!

Here's a photo of the over sized wrench with extra gripping area compared to a normal filter wrench.

Well, did you take his advice to heart?

Did you inspect the element for particulate matter while you were in there?

I was too passed off to do anything with it! That was 4 hours worth of work. It was the first oil change I did when I got the truck

Impressive wrench, no doubt, but not impressive enough for me to spend $110 for it.

Looks good as long as you have the clearance. I do not remember what it was on but something I owned requires a swivel handle.

Gotta get up near the filter head or my wrench just crushes the filter

I bought a wrench I think will be better than what I use now at a flea market for a song, but gotta take time to spray it with rubber coating, it slips

Try folding over some emery cloth & putting between filter & wrench.

I've done that in a pinch with limited success on this Excursion.

Because of clearance I have to put the strap part around the bottom of the filter and slide it up on the filter. Only the thinnest part fits up there.

The sandpaper doesn't survive well, wherever the backing is, it slips- wrench side, or if I put back to back, etc. Maybe my paper is just too old
