help with loud noise under the hood

I have a 1987 F250 with the 351 v8 windsor, carbureted. I started it today and first the engine shook and there was a loud rattling..and the engine stopped. it almost sounded like dieseling but when i got out of the cab there was a loud rattling and the engine died. I havent tried to restart it worrying it might casue more damage.

any ideas on how to diagnose??

Uhhh ... Those don't just break on their own, I would investigate why this happened before you install a new one. While you have it off it might be a good time to replace the timing cover, chain and sprocket, and front crank seal.

I absolutely agree....not sure what happened. It happened while my daughter drove it the other day...of course her answer to my what happened...came with a resounding "nothing" and I dont know..lol. I plan to to take advantage of the fact that its off to inspect and replace as necessary...

Check the woodruff key on the crank itself, maybe that came loose or busted for some reason and let the balancer go wild ...

I would not worry about it too much. The rubber deteriorates and they come apart. not a big deal. NOTHING she would of dont short of running the truck into a large oak tree would of had any effect on it
