Need some advice on importing a classic from Canada

Has anyone ever done this that can advise me on any potential issues? A friend of mine has a REALLY nice '76 F-250 Camper Special with a near mint slide-in camper. He'd give me a great deal on it, but it's in Calgary. I see the potential for an awesome road trip, but I don't want to have any hassle at the border. I've looked at the Customs website and it seems pretty easy as long as it's more than 25 years old. Basically it says that you just have to have the ownership papers in hand, fill out a form, and check in at the border patrol station to pay a small tax based on value.

The only potential issue I see is this: I would want to register it, insure it, and tag it in my name before I pick it up, but in order to do that I'm sure I'd need the importation paperwork, which the Customs made it sound like I'd need to fill out at the border patrol station. How can I get around that? Can this be done by mail?

Thanks.

I would suggest you contact your local Motor Vehicles Department for advice.

I tried them, they were about as useful as a poopie flavored lollipop. I have an email in to Raleigh, hopefully they'll answer next week.
