The mirror was stuck so I oiled the little ball joint and now the joint is loose. Is the a way to tighten the joint?

 

 

I had that same problem with mine. Nothing I could do. Replacing it was my only option. Got the bonus of new shiny mirrors.

Got mine from LMC but you can probably find a pair at auto parts stores.

Try tightening the two screws on the bottom,worked for me.

 

If you had factory mirrors, then no, nothing you can do. Then again, if you had factory mirrors you probably wouldn't need to.

With aftermarket mirrors like those, the two screws will tighten it up. And then it'll loosen up again and you can retighten the screws again. And again. And again.

The only downside to factory mirrors is they're stinking expensive. I paid a dealer $300 for a pair of new ones for my '97. It stung a lot at the time, but I sure love having mirrors that stay where they're pointed and don't vibrate.

 

Take the nut off, take the mirror off and tighten those two phillips screws on either side of the ball. Then re-install it.

 

Since adding lubricant caused the mirror to be too loose, why not try spraying the same area with brake cleaner and see if it is better?

 

the screws tightened and the mirror seems to be better but soon began to move around while driving again.

Would a bit of loctite on the ball work?

 

Try putting some urine or DEF on that little ball, and let it sit.

 

The mirror head came with the mirror, but it was also available by itself.

We tried putting some DEF on that little ball, and let it sit. No better.
We tried dimpling that little ball with one of my good small center punches. It dulled the point! WTHeck do they make that little ball out of???
Tonight we wrapped a small cotton strip around that little ball and soaked it in DEF. Tomorrow hopefully its smooth surface will have been attacked by the urea in the DEF.
