High milage oil change questions

I never thought I would be asking about oil and filter types ,
but better safe than sorry with what is all new to me ; " modern
engines " , I have a 2006 f 150 with the 4.6 2 valve , it has just
under 170,000 miles on it , last oil change I used SAE 5 W - 30
and a napa gold filter , now its time to change the oil and want
to make sure that the oil/ filter combo is ok or should I use a
different filter , I think I'm ok to go with a 5W-30 oil .

That filter is made by Wix which are good quality filters. Stay away from cheap filters. They can break apart and get glue debris trapped in the oil orifice in the cylinder head starving it from oil. The oil will be fine.

I own lots of those exact engines in my police crown vics. I personally like 5w-30 after 150k miles, but you could also use 5w-20 as well. 5w-20 thru 10w-30 is the range you can use on these engines.

Also avoid the high miles oils, they just drain your wallet! You will find even todays cheap oil are super good quality.

Oh, forgot to mention........Wix, Napa Gold, Motorcraft, and Amsoil filters are ok to use on our engines. No others!!!!!! The other companys put the bypass valve in the wrong location, therfor pushing all the debris back into the engine on every cold start.

Ok , I'll stay with the napa gold and 5W-30 , thanks for the heads up
about the other filters , wonder how many of these engines suffer
from the wrong filter choice ?

My 4.6 has a shade over 170k now and I still use 5w20 Motorcraft and Motorcraft filters with no issues and no consumption to speak of.
I wonder if I could say the same if I used other products.

I have a 4.0 Explorer and a 5.4 F150 ...... use 5W20 Mobil dyno oil and Motorcraft filters.. both have 170K miles... change at 5,000 mile intervals.. no oil usage to speak of.

Same here at 169,000 plus miles it uses very little oil and
no oil leaks to speak of , so guess I lucked out on that .

I have used the motorcraft filter and oil (5W20) since day one. Cannot say I have had any issues, and been pleased with the oil changes. Just turned 132,000 on my 06 5.4. Was going to switch brands after warranty was up, but the motorcraft prices are decent and readily available at Walmart around here.

The Motorcraft synthetic-blend oil is great. Depending on the range of temps expected in eastern WA, I probably would go with the 5W-20 and keep my eye on it for consumption. If you don't measure significant consumption there's really no call to go to 5W-30.

5W 30 will put more tension on the cam chains at cold start until full warm up occurs.
This causes excess wear on the chain guides.
If you were to run an oil pressure gauge, this would be seen as higher pressure for a longer period of time as opposed to 5w20.
My 4.6 is now at 276,000. Motor runs as new.
Good luck.
