Addng PTO to F-Superduty

Looking at adding a PTO to my 1996 F-Superduty, 7.5L, ZF 5 speed (S5-47 wide ratio) to run a 11 foot dump bed. I plan on converting it into 4x4, so it will have a BW 4407 transfer case.

What would be the best side to mount the PTO, drivers side or passenger side? Will the pump attach directly to the PTO, or will I have to use a driveshaft to turn the pump? Any idea how many GPM the pump should be?

Any other information would be appreciated! Model numbers, pictures of your set up. I would assume this would be very similar to a F350 cab and chassis set up.

1. If you put a t-case on, what are you going to do about a parking brake?

2. Which ever side has more room to mount the PTO. The drivers side will be limited by the front drive shaft, the passenger by the exhaust.

3. the modern hydraulic pumps mount directly to the PTO . Only old antiquated pot setups use driveshafts

4.no clue on GPM but pretty much anyone you are going to find will work a dump hoist.

a zf5-s47 take a specific pump. It HAS to be for the s47 gas. A s42 is a different drive gear as well as the diesel s47

BTW I have one from a Big block s47 for sale(with hydraulic pump)

I haven't figured out the parking brake situation yet.

I live in a flat region and with the massive amounts of salt dumped on the roads every year, a lot of older vehicles have parking brakes that are frozen. But I do want to figure out the parking brake situation. IIRC, one of the companies that converted these trucks to 4x4 attached it to the back of the transfer case.

With the addition of a front driveshaft, I bet a passenger side mounting PTO would work better. I bet a C&C F350 4x4 would give me a good idea on clearance issue. I'll try to stop at the local tow truck shop that used to run OBS rigs and see how theirs was installed.

I'll PM you on the PTO and pump. Thanks for the help.

Next up. What front axle are you going to use?
A dana 60 is Not rated for the weight of a F-superduty

Yes, Quigley was one company that converted these trucks to 4wd and they made custom rear housing of the t-case to remount the parking brake IIRC the rear housing was like $1500 or something

Thanks for the information.

Wasn't the Dana 60 used in the 99-2004 F450 before they offered the Super 60 in 2005? Any idea what was changed between the OBS and Super Duty 60 pre 2005?

Different dana 60 rated for the added weight. A standard dana 60 is only rated for about 4500lbs While the dana 70(used in the 4wd conversion) is rated at more like 5500lbs.

Also, what are you planning for the 8 to 10 lug wheels?

I have 8 to 10 lug adapters.

the dana holding corporation rated the 60 for 6000 pounds for front axles and 6500 pounds for rear axle full floaters. the manufacturers derated them for the specific vehicles they were being installed in. not sure how much weight rating you need for this application though

Thanks for the information blue. I would think it will suffice, especially when common sense is factored in when loading the truck.

I would imagine manufactures derate them due to different components such as springs, tires, brakes, gearing, knuckles, etc.

I need to spend more time researching this, but my initial research shows the OBS and the pre 2005 Super Duty share many components, ring gear size, axle shaft size, and spline count. In addition to changing to a metric pattern, different universal joints and perhaps knuckles were used. Given this was used in the F550, I think with a little care, it will work fine in a F-Superduty.

another option to consider that i am not sure would work or not is researching aftermarket versions of the Dana 60 if that is the axle you want to run. in the off road community aftermarket companies manufacter exact replicas of the 60 but with upgrades that take care of its weaker points. Im not sure if this would increase weight carrying capacity, or if any custom fabrication would be needed to make it fit but it is something to research and consider if nothing else

That's definently something to look into. I'd rather use a Dana 70, but I have a 1997 F350 parts truck sitting here, so I may as well put it to good use.

If I was going to convert an F-Super Duty,I would use a Dana Super 60 & the rear from same truck.Mine goes so well as 2wd,I long since tossed out the desire to convert it.One day though, the time will come when I update my all around/multi purpose 4wd truck and then I'll likely build such a truck.

I hope you like being in 4wd all the time then. the 19.s that is mandatory with those axles absoluty SUCK for traction, even with big luggers
