Dana rear axle

Our 1898 E350 motorhome parking brake cable stuck on during our last trip. Got it to a garage where they removed the drum and released parking brake; however, no one in town had stock to replace cable so put everything back together and continued home.
have a new one, but having trouble getting bearings out to remove drum. It has the ratcheting style bearing retainer. In the past about 12 clicks on the retainer and then removed by hand; this time managed to get about a quarter turn before the retainer just froze. I have a homemade removal tool fabricated from key stock welded onto a pipe, but right now it is so tight the tangs on the tool have bent- I can move it neither forward or backwards.
Has anyone else encountered this problem before, and if so, how did you overcome? Impact on tool? Drift and hammer? Is the retainer finished?

Thanks

Well, the problem has been found and solved. rather embarrassed to say the left axle uses left hand threads on the ratcheting hub nut. Turning the correct direction works wonders.
