2018 DRW 6.2 for Truck Camper
#31
I have a 2017 6.2 cclb dually with 3.73's. I carry a 9.5 bigfoot. Generally get 10 mpg driving through the mountains. It shifts. But nothing that was annoying or unexpected. Lock out sixth if it really bothers you. The truck has ridiculous power, is super stable and the camper load is nothing in that truck. Love it. I never once regretted getting the 3.73.
If shifting bothers someone that bad they should buy a car and stay in hotels. I prefer to load my truck and let it work the way it was designed to.

I will say this with that kind of load I would strongly suggest that you upgrade your rear swaybar to a Hellwing Big Wig for performance and safety gains...

Very pleased with the truck to date. I've got about 1,500 unloaded miles on the truck and it has been a true pleasure to drive. The tranny/engine combo are smooth as silk and the truck climbs the local passes (Middlebury and Brandon gaps) with little effort; purrs right along on the interstate. Based on the computer, it's been averaging just over 12mpg. I stuck with the base tire and am very pleased with the Michelins that came on it. I tested out 4LO in our hilly pasture with around 6in of snow and it crawled around just like a tractor. The ESOF works great - much preferred to the manual transfer case on my previous chevy and fords. Sure don't miss those manual hubs! The 4x system in general sounds so much better than the 1/2 ton chevy I came out of.
Truck has the 4.3 axle, 4wd, laramie value pkg, camera system, carpet delete, skid plates, camper pkg and upfitter switches. I installed the Husky floor liners front/back - fit like a glove and catch all the salty muck off the boots. I need to intall front mud flaps - the front tires shovel all the road crap on top of the running boards. And I need a topper or tonneau for when I won't be carrying a camper. Kinda leaning towards the tonneau for a change - I've been enjoying the unloaded view out the rear window which you never get out the dirty rear window on a topper... at least when you live on a dirt road!
Good luck with your search. I ordered the truck. I only found one 6.2 drw around here and it wasn't equipped as I wanted. Placed order on 11/9; took delivery 1/18.

Thank you for your quick response. Have you loaded it or towed with it yet? We currently have a travel trailer, but like you are thinking of adding a heavy truck camper to our fleet. I'm more interested in payload than I am in overall towing capacity with this purchase. This, along with some other things, has me leaning gas this time around (we currently have 3 diesels). I read some of your questions earlier on the 4.30 gears. That is what I am thinking also. Any second thoughts?
If I order one instead of finding it on the lot, I will definitely go with the carpet delete. We have vinyl flooring in our van and absolutely love it.

We ended up with the AF990. Very comfortable camper and a seems to be a good fit for this truck - although I have no comparison as this is our first camper! We have ~10k on the truck, ~5k with camper and with the exception of the leaking tire valve stems on the drw aluminum wheels we are are pleased.

Having spent many night in our Arctic Fox over the almost 8 years of ownership I can tell you they are a GREAT camper.
I don't know what you have for a bed liner but run down to Tractor Supply and get a piece of horse stall mating. Comes in 4ft x tell them length of bed. Made from tires. Cushion the ride, protect camper/bed. get the 3/4 or 5/8 thickness about 50 bucks, last forever, you will be glad you did.
You will note (or you wife will) a lot of sway and lean going thru corners, especially on the 'ranch' roads (down here in Texas) , but the backroads we often travel. Fix the sway by installing a "Big Wig" sway bar in place of the wet noodle ford gives you. MAJOR different in ride and handling, worth the money. I think I paid around $280 shipped.
Rancho RS9000XL shocks, they are adjustable and you can tune your ride.
Torklift Stable Loads, IMO you don't need the lowers, only the uppers. I had them on 3 different F 350 trucks, the last 2 were dually's. https://www.torklift.com/rv/stableload
Upper stable load
This is all I did to my 3 F 250 My AF 1150 tipping the scales at 5000 lbs loaded and wet, my truck drove better then most cars and handled better than most cars, best investment in your driving and truck you can make...
I have thousands of miles under my AF in my F 350, if have any questions just ask or send me a PM, I have a ton of pics I can send. Be careful there is a LOT of snake oil out there...
