Exclamation Battery light on, amps shoot up when reved and hot alternator!?!

Guys, I am lost on this one.

Just replaced the original 90amp alternator with a remanufactured 120amp alternator from Advance Auto Parts. It worked fine for about a week.

On my way home from work (45 mile commute) the battery warning light on the dash came on. I pulled over and everything appeared ok.

I made it home but on the way noticed when I put the truck in N and reved the engine about 4,500rpm the light went away. BUT...if I reved it higher maybe 6,000rpm the amp gauge would go all the way up and the battery light came back, even the abs light would light up.

Do you guys think that it is screwed up because I put a larger alternator on, or is it a defective part? I am lost.

P.S. The battery is also semi-new, just a few months old.

All responses would be appreciated, as I am lost on this one.

Thanks!

Take it back for warranty.
The regulator is faulty.
What's happening is the voltage is going high and not under control of the regulator.
You can see this with a voltmeter.
Run like this too long will damage the battery and burn out light bulbs from over voltage and cause the alternator to run hot..
Good luck.

Some extra insight on this issue.
The alternator while able to output 120 amperes is not designed to run at that level for long periods of time due to lack of cooling.
No battery is charged at much more than about 50 amps right after starting the motor to return charge to the battery. This makes the alternator able to output high currents for a short period without excessive heating.
Continuous battery charging at high current levels boils the electrolyte and damages the lead plates, not to mention wearing the alternator brushes excessively.
Charging takes place at higher system voltages that subjects all other functions to excess.
This can usually be seen at night with the headlights on that will change noticeable brightness with a rise in engine rpm off idle.
This indicates a charge system fault or even a battery capacity fault that should show up as slow cranking.
Good luck.
