I am looking at a 2016 F250 diesel. It's configured exactly how I want it and the price is good so I would really like to pull the trigger but I have one concern.

There seems to be a louder than what I would expect to hear hissing or air noise at idle coming from somewhere in the engine bay. It's not outrageously loud but almost sounds like an air leak. The reason I noticed it is that my 2011 F350 does have a similar sound but it is barely audible. The "Service Advisor" at the Ford dealer where this truck is sitting swears it is the wastegate and they all make this noise. I didn't think there was a wastegate on the 2016's. They said that they all have wastegates. This is a smaller dealer that does not move very many diesels and since it is still under warranty if I do buy it I will probably take it directly to my regular Ford dealer that has a specific diesel shop. I just don't have a lot of faith in this dealer's experience with diesels and I will be heading to Florida with it about 3 weeks after I get it.

So, two questions;

1. I know it's a vague description but does anybody have any comments on this sound? Is it normal to hear a bit of a hissing or whooshing noise on a 2016?

2. Can anyone give me a definitive answer as to whether or not the 2016 has a wastegate?

15/16 have no waste gate. Check the tubes going to/from the inter-cooler for leaks. Any stored codes in the PCM?

 

silly question, did they continue without the waste gate on the 17s? I sorta thought it was hard on the diesel motors not to have a waste gate. All the stuff I've heard from old school diesel guys.

 

15-16 control boost with the variable veins, seems to control just fine, can't see it being any harder on a truck. 17 I am not sure tho.

 

Ford removed the wastegate for 15 when they went from the Garrett G32 Single Sequential Turbocharger back the a more conventional but bigger turbo in the G37. For 17, they have returned to the SST type turbo. I am not sure of what type it is, but since it is a SST I would almost guess they had to add back the wastegate.
