1986 F150 wire harness
#46
Now I got some good news bad news on my wires.
I think I found where them cut wires go after looking at this link again for the 100th time. A/C & Heater - ???Gary's Garagemahal
Down on page 145 and the light bulb went off! I had to go to my garage and dig in 1 of my parts bins to find the HVAC control panels I have and there it was!
Both are for factory AC. 1 on the right is also for duel tanks (switch is on the left on the control when looking at it.
and the money shot!
I looked them over before and was looking for a large plug/socket like the switches.
Then looking over the link I saw it said HVAC control and a little lower picture it showed the wires going in on the end. Sure enough there they are.
Bad new I don't have that plug but I think I can use spade connectors and make it work. I just need the pin out as the one I saw was a square not in a line like I have.
If you look on the rear of your control panel the AC harness should plug into it. Could you list the color of the wires top to bottom that would help.
You will need this (AC) harness and plugs to repair if you cannot find one in a junk yard. IIRC there are only 2 wires (green/purple & black/yellow) that go into the engine bay (they go thru firewall under the HVAC box) from this harness.
Now if you find a complete harness with AC and not going to use that AC harness I would take it for that control panel plug and I could then splice it onto mine.
Thank you for your help looking over your harness to check things out.

I needed the wire pin out for the wires going into the back of the HVAC control panel.
They would be the 2 brown/white wires, green/purple and black/yellow wires.
I say "needed" as I did find the pin out for them.
I also found out the early control had a square plug and later years a in line plug like I have now.
When I get on my computer I will start a post on where to get the plug with part numbers as I couldn't find details on them.

Not a bone head at all and I am happy you are helping me on this issue. Besides I am sure it will help you when you start the re-wiring project on your truck.
The pin out I needed (I did find it with help on the other Ford truck site I am on) but will help you.
Not the sockets on either side but in the very end/center, the black/white socket that has the white vacuum nipples (on the left side of socket) on it has 4 pins in a line.
I found on early trucks this was a square socket and later trucks went in line like the 2 controls I have. I don't know what you may have but thinking in line as you have a really later truck being an 86. So when JY hunting just keep an eye on the AC plug harness that will work with your control or get the control from the JY truck the harness comes from.
The lever that controls the vent doors with AC has this switch built into it that turns on the compressor.
I am now seeing if I can buy a new plug to splice onto the cut wires other wise I will add to the cut wires and ends to fit the socket pins.
Clear as mudd right
Again thinks for your help

Looking over the picture you first posted the heat looks to be at the batt/ALT area.
Bill/aka ND said in his post of gauge harness then ALT harness the cause of fires.
I have seen a lot of post of the ALT the cause of fires and I am thinking that is what your cause was.
I would think if it was from the carb you would have more heat damage on the left side of the engine bay.
That is 1 of the big reasons for the 3G ALT swap so no fire.

I took your advice on a parts truck and I'm thinking it's going to save me hours of frustration and parts chasing.
I'm one step ahead of you. Im already searching the 3G swap. I did use one of the Generals one wire alternator on a 73 F100 with a 460, so I might go that way. I'm not sure yet. I do like the idea of my Ford being all ford, but that GM alternator was stupid easy to put on that 460.
