Sealing Stove Vent in Cold Weather

Last week it was pretty cold at elk camp. There was a rather significant flow of cold air coming through my stove vent. Before leaving town I put a layer of Reflectix on the outside vent but it didn't survive the drive up into the mountains.

What's a good way to seal off the stove vent, at least while not cooling on the stove top? I stuck a few layers of paper town between the hood and the filter. That worked pretty good, but it was maybe a 60% solution.

I like the idea of foam. I can stuff it up into the vent from the outside. I tried that with the Reflectix but it must have come out while on the road.

It would be nice if there was a damper in the vent so that it only opened when the hood fan was on.

I really should just give up and stick to 3 seasons with this trailer. It really isn't cut out for cold weather.

I just fold a small towel and place it in the outside area for cold/ windy times. There are different cover styles, mine has a overhang/ sides so the towel stays dry. Something like this.

That's about what my outside vent looks like.

I thought I would ask about this as someone may have come up with a novel way to block the air from the inside. Like something that replaces the filter so that you don't have to go outside and remove the block if you want to use the vent while cooking.s

Mine is by the entery door so its easy to get to, inside the camper my microwave is above the stove and the vent is bhind it so you can't get to it easily.

I just cut a piece of 1/2" foam board the same size as the filter and replace the filter with it. I leave it in place all winter. I still use the stove with it in place but only to use my stove top auto drip coffee maker

I keep seeing this thread and something has been bugging me. When you guys block that vent, are you doing something visible at the stove to show the vent is blocked, as a reminder? I know it isn't a big deal as these vents are fairly ineffective to begin with. Just curious.

It crossed my mind to put something on the hood to remind me that the vent was blocked.

It's an almost useless vent better off using the fantastic fan vent in the kitchen area to exhaust smell, moisture, smoke from drippings in stove. I'll bet in 6 years ours has been used once and opening the door/ fantastic fan worked better.

You got that right! It seems like the stove vent's purpose is to let freezing cold air in when my furnace is working like crazy to keep the trailer warm.

never thought about doing something to that vent. Just use the tabs to close the cover is all I have done.

Mine is behind a microwave as well.

I don't have any tabs on mine. Are these tabs inside within the hood or outside on the vent?

The tabs are around the frame of the vent. Just little tabs that you turn by hand to keep it closed.
