Question Bypass oil filters

Hi, I just had an engine failure and am going to have to do an engine rebuild. I posted about that last week.

I'm thinking now might be the time to add a bypass oil filter system. I've heard good things about Amsoil, but I'd like to know what else is out there. (BTW, I use synthetic).

It would be nice to add a sight tube somewhere in the system so that I could easily detect the added volume from fuel dilution in the oil. It would also be nice to have easy access to oil changes (like a pump out system) so that I can switch over to the 5000 mile oil change interval.

Looking at $8K to $12K in investment into the truck. I don't want that to happen again, so looking to make the trust more robust.

BTW, the truck is a 2009, but only has 32K on the odometer. So whatever happened to it might be because I only take it out on the freeway one or twice a month. Diesel rot so to speak.

so aside from by pass filtering (I have the amsoil 2 micron setup), other toys are oil preluber.

the preluber sends 55 psi of oil to the engine for up to 30 seconds. it takes the average joe 2 seconds to turn the key and crank

by the time the started is engaged, 55 psi of oil is in the engine lubing the bearings, lifters, rocker tips, etc

this system prevents dry starts....the most wear generating aspect of engine operation.

I had a commercial oil bypass on a 6.0L, it connected at the oil filter cap. Honestly, I would love to have one on my 6.4L but I never saw any advantage to justify the cost as soot build up was still present.

As it is now, I change my oil filter every 5000 and the oil every 10000.

I was looking at a bypass system as well. One that uses a amsoil filter. Is there a more economical filter that can be used with these systems? Also how often do you change the bypass filter?

There are 3 replacement filter sizes. 90/100/110 which I think is the grams they hold. Mileage on them is 60k/70k/80k.

the filters are expensive but are supposed to last quite a while.

You will know when they need replacement , the fill cap return line flow will slow to just barely better than fast drops.

filter gets pretty heVy when full.

Now that makes sense. Thank you for the knowledge on that one fritz. I have seen a used system for sale with a good price and a brand new filter and and very tempted to buy it. Extending engine life would be a nice feature. Do you extend your oils change interval with it or do you still go 5,000 miles?

No I don’t extend them

Not a fan of oil sample testing....rather spend the money on new oil.

I agree with that. I am gonna test after this oil change just because it will be my first change in this truck, hopefully get a picture of the inside of the motor. But probably will not continue. Thanks for the info.

Well I took the plunge. I bought a sinister diesel bypass kit with a brand new amsoil 100 filter. Got it for $165.

Will be installing the bypass system tomorrow. If you have any pointers let me know. I will try and get some pics and post after install thoughts.

these filters install in vertical or horizontal position but not mount on bottom with filter on top. Use gas grade thread tape which is yellow. CAreful with routing hoses near exhaust pipes.

tighten filter hand tight as much as possible then 1/8 more with a filter wrench.

check for leaks often the first few minutes of operation. Oil light is a switch which comes on if oil drops below 5psi.

165 is a great deal. It’s almost coolant bypass filter price. Make sure you have the cap that replaces the stock caps if you are talking about the oil bypass system

Coolant bypass doesnt use caps...it’s like the tranny bypass in which you cut some lines and install t’ with clamps.

I do have all the caps, just missing the mount. I already have the coolant filter setup. Have put an email to sinister to see if I can purchase the double mount bracket they have, not sure if they will sell it separate though. Will make one without a problem. I thought that the fittings on the stainless hoses didn't need tape but will take your word for it. Will go get some. I was gonna cover the braided lines with wire loom to make sure and take care of the rubbing problems. Will steer clear of the exhaust as well. I kinda like the idea of mounting it horizontally since it is pretty tall, will have to see what it looks like.

Another question, since you add a qt to the filter during install. Do ou pull the filter and drain it every oil change? Or is it just gonna be a 4 gallon and 1qt capacity and just gets 4 changed at a time?
