Baby Swamps with .84 Housing?

Got a 97 7.3 with all the supporting mods needed to go to the next step of injectors and a turbo. Bought a Banks intercooler as well. Has a hydra chip. I tow heavy around 20k total combined weight through mountain passes here in WA state. Truck has 4.10s and 265x75xR16s.

Went to to a local shop who’s a vendor for Swamp’s and Industrial Injection. The guy there recommended the baby Swamps injectors and an new Industrial injectoion stock turbo replacement with a .84 housing and the ebpv delete pedestal. Totalprice including the injectors, turbo, and intercooler installed was 5,700. Ouch.

I just don’t know about a .84 housing for towing heavy when I need to downshift. I would think the drive pressure would be too high and my EGTs would climb at higher RPMs.

What are your suggestions? Also looking for someone to install injectors and a turbo in Eastern WA stare.

I installed the stock super duty .84 turdbo on my OBS and ill tell you what egts have never been this low, I was running a 66 mm inducer 1.00 ex housing and egts and power were out of control but this was due to me not sending my chip to get reburn for the New turbo. Look at my sig works great when towing. Good luck

Yes i converted my OBS to the 99-03 turbo set up and fuel set up as well.
The turbo is just a stock GTP38.

What do you want to be able to do with the truck? Are you willing to do a little wrenching?

I just use it for towing my 5th wheel toyhauler. I’m willing to do some wrenching. Done work on suspension, axle, and miscellaneous work on my Jeep Wrangler that I wheel with. Just don’t know much about dealing with injectors and turbos on an obs 7.3.

I tow up to 20K when I have the Geo behind my 5er. The 5er is 17K with pin weight of 4K. I worry about that much pin weight on my axle. What work did you do on your axle? Just curious.

All the work I’ve done has been on the Jeep. On the truck I added the Intake, exhaust, gauges, and bigger transcooler myself. Just have never had to do any major work on my truck.

I used to run a 3700 lb truck camper for years on my rear axle before I bought my 5th wheel. Never had a problem on my single rear wheel axle. If yours is a dually, I think you would be even better off than I was.

I'm not sure I would recommend that combination (or that price tag). I think that will be too small a turbo to feed it with those injectors (baby Swamps are rated at 150 cc). I'm in the middle of installing Rosewood Stage 1 Injectors (160cc @$1235) and a billet turbo wheel (less than $200 from Riffraff Diesel) into my truck and I was told by the tuner I am working with that the turbo will be too small to fully realize the benefits of that turbo. Going to a smaller exhaust housing, I would think will let it spool sooner, but will make it suffer more on the top end.

I should be able to let you know some real world results in a week or two on my thread. I'm aiming at logging data and posting the results if you can wait that long.

Everything I am planning to do to this truck could be done for less than half the price they quoted you since I'm not replacing the turbo. You should also know that you can just buy the smaller (quickspool) housing to go on the turbo you already have. That's a cheap way to achieve more or less the same results. You can also do a brand new aftermarket turbo kit for around $2k, so that price seems really high to me.

My thoughts exactly. I had actually considered going with a obs KC TP38R turbo instead.

Assuming a good portion of that is labor, that may not be a terrible price, but if you're handy with a wrench, you can do all this work yourself. It's not "rocket surgery"...
