is this a canister coil?

If you buy the coil from an auto parts store, make sure it's made in the USA

The original part number was E3FZ-12029-A .. There are 3 available NOS

The replacement part number was E73Z-12029-A .. There are 2 available NOS (one in CA, the other in NY).

I called the seller in CA to verify if he still has it. He's going to call me back, so I'll let you know.
if it's a canister coil I'm interested...i was told by one dealer that the new number was f7pz 12029-aa or a dg-470. which seems to be an e-coil?

I noticed that F7PZ part number on Ford's online parts catalog, but it doesn't say it replaced E73Z.

That was what i was told by a phone parts person....anyway...i''ll be using a canister style coil that talks well with a motor-craft spark box, so if one is available and i can afford it..I'll bite..thanks for your efforts all, and especially numberdummy....

When Bo from Mustang Service Center (North Hollywood CA) calls me back, I'll let you know if he still has the E73Z coil.

The coil is no longer available from this source.

I have been looking for a genuine Motorcraft canister coil also, I believe the part # we are looking for is D5AZ-12029-A . This also may be a black one instead of blue. No luck yet however.

Other than a few stray NOS parts out there, the genuine Motorcraft caninster coil seems to have gone the way of the dodo bird. I'm surprised Motorcraft no longer offers this part, as there must still be several bazillion vehicles on the road that still use this part. I was able to get a Motorcraft cap and rotor, and even the pickup module if I remember correctly, but no joy with the coil.

Here's how I got around any concerns about the longevity of aftermarket coils. I mounted a new NAPA premium coil on the back of the AC compressor bracket on my 351W, but kept the original Motorcraft coil in its stock location as a spare. If the new coil acts up, I can quickly swap the wiring back to the original and continue on my way:

So far so good, no problems with the new coil.

This is a good plan..

I should say that this new blue coil began to fail..in about 20 miles or so right away. Upon returning home, I re-installed the old greasy spare I had and it has been working like a champ..so far.

I returned the new blue one and got another blue one for a spare at least until I locate another motor-craft coil.

Thanks for the tip on the Napa premium coil as well. The sure-fire solution seems to be carry spare parts, and tools, hand cleaner...
