Cleaning EGR valve on a 97 explorer with 5.0
Has anybody ever had to do this. I expected it to be in need of this but the check engine light is on and reads the code telling me "egr flow excessive" and heater for one of the oxygen sensors is not functioning right. The EGR is where i have no experience. I have not dealt with this before and would like advice from somebody who has that experience. I know it needs to be taken off and cleaned but how do i remove it.

Do you know which 5.0 setup you have? Either way, they are both fun to take on/off. I have done mine a few times - cussed every time. The hardest part is getting the EGR valve off itself.
If you need specific directions, let me know. Cleaning the valve and soleniod will help, but most of the times I have seen, the EGR valve quits and needs replacing, not just cleaning.

Before you clean the EGR valve I would check the DFPE sensor. It is probably bad. It's the sensor that tells the EGR system how much flow there is.
It has two pnuematic Lines (rubber vacuum lines) comint out of it that connect to the egr pipe near the egr valve
