1979 F250 460 auto

I recently picked the truck up for my son. It has the 460 and is a 2wheel drive. It is slow to shift into second gear so I checked the tranny fluid and it was about a half of a quart low but it is the brownest smelliest tranny fluid I have even seen. I want to change the fluid and filter soon! The code on the dipstick says ESP M2C138-CJ oil. My question is what fluid is that? Is it type F or a mercon oil or what? Also what brand of fluid do you guys suggest and how many quarts do I need? I doubt if I can get the torque converter drained unless it has a accessible drain plug. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Should be Dex/Merc. And the torque converter has a drain plug accessible through bellhousing inspection cover. Next to one of the studs on converter

FORD has since dropped MERCON and has gone to MERCON V.

You should still be able to buy DEXRON III form another refiner.

PENNZOIL DEXRON-III/MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid

Suitable for use in applications requiring Ford M2C138CJ and Ford Type H fluids.
