How much fluid does a C6 transmission hold? I'm replacing the oil pan gasket and will loose fluid but not the entire amount. Just curious so I can refill properly.

5-8? You must be lucky, I would change mine every month if that were the case. Mine last time I did it (4x4 model=deeper pan) and drained torque converter. I think mine took 4 gallons, but if you leave the torque converter and have the short pan, that probably is closer to 2 gallons.

He only asked about what's in the pan. That's 5-8 quarts. Yours wouldn't be much more than that if you only drained the pan.

Gotta say, every time I read a post that contradicts specs says "I been running XXX and never had a problem with it", I am reminded of the woman who didn't use birth control because she had "done it hundreds of times and never got pregnant". It may work a while, but no one ever knows whether maybe what should have lasted 200,000 miles may only last 75K. I figure the millions of R&D bucks the OEM put into it usually outweighs some shade tree expert's opinion based on one vehicle.

Yup - thanks. Just losing the pan fluid as I replace the gasket.

Toss a strong, but small magnet in the bottom of the pan if you have one available. Place it strategically out of the filters way.

It will help to pick up any metal inside the case/fluid as it goes by the magnet.

One more question, what is the proper way to check trans fluid level? Do I need to drive it to warm up the transmission then check level or just warm up engine and check level.

You do check while engine is running, why?

Warm up the trans by driving it. The fluid is checked with the engine running because a variable amount will drain out of the trans when the engine is off.

Best gaskets? Is rubber better than cork for gasket seal on the pan?

For what is it worth I would leave the Type F in it.
Type F won't hurt a Mercon spec'd tranny but Mercon in a type F tranny will quickly destroy it.

The rule is if you are not sure use Type F.
F is a better fluid anyway.
