5 Star was quick to tell me I was not supposed to be towing with the performance tune as it is not designed to do such. I didn't realize until yesterday they gave me an 89 tow tune when I requested an 89 performance. Say they will get me the 89 perf

Talk to your gear installer about the differential temps, they are a good bit hotter than what I see. I run a sensor in the rear housing and monitor the diff temp with a stand alone (engine oil temp) gauge and have seen it go as high as 245* briefly when pulling the 11K TT on a long hill. On most trips it gets up to 210-230* and hangs there while towing at 65-ish MPH. Back when I swapped my rear to the 4.88s and installed the gauge I researched the Mobil 1 oil I use and if I recall correctly it is supposed to be stable up to 320-325*.
an oil temp sensor in the rear axle. That’s exactly the kind of nerdery i would enjoy. PLEASE tell me details of exactly what you got.

Ive never before even thought of pointing my IR laser gun at mine.
This is going to be great.

I just replaced my fill plug with a brass plug, then drilled and tapped it for the temp sensor for a GlowShift engine oil gauge. Yes technically the temp sensor is just above the oil level, but once moving the hot oil is in contact with it and everything else inside the diff.
The factory finned cover ('08+) doesn't really hold more fluid, I have one on mine as well.
