Tearing out the old headliner

I bought a new interior kit from LMC and thought i would start with the headliner and work my way down. I tore out the old headliner that had the stereo mounted in the roof. There was no insulation previously except this white cotton like material in thr forward section. Not sure what that is. My question is has anybody used Roxul home insulation on the roof? It's fireproof, waterproof a good sound deadener and insulation all in one. Also, if anybody has advise for installing a bow style headliner in a 56 F100 please let me know, thanks.

I would say that is a mouse nest! Check your seat for missing padding.

It looks like the PO glued that headliner onto the original cardboard headliner.

It looks like the previous owner used cotton batting often used in the seat cushions. If it is mouse nests you would see a LOT of droppings for that size nest. It probably should not be used as it needs to breathe better or it will hold moisture and cause your rust problem. Have fun sanding the roof.

I'm not sure if it was the original cardboard or not but you are correct the headliner was glued to the cardboard. The picture makes the rust look worse than it is. I think a light sanding and paint will be just fine. Just trying to decide on insulation or not. Thanks for the reply.

I would use some type of insulation. That metal roof transmits a lot of heat on a hot sunny day.

2X using some sort of insulation in the roof. It helps with both heat and reducing noise.
