fuel gauge

I have a 1955 Ford F 100 and I have the stock fuel gauge. I have switched over to a 12 volt system and want to see if I can use the stock fuel gauge. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have a '52 and when I switched over to 12 volts I kept all of the original gauges. You just need to put a resistor in the line.

A resistor may work, but it's got to be carefully and accurately sized. A simpler and probably better solution is to use a true 6V CVR (constant voltage regulator) such as the L7806 - these things are less than $0.50 and product a constant 6V regardless of input voltage. Unlike a chopper style unit (like the OEM Ford piece used from mid-50s through '80s?) or a resistor that change voltage output based on voltage input, the 6V CVR always provides exactly 6V. This is most useful on the gas gauge.

I ran my stock '55 gas gauge with the factory sender hooked to 12v for almost twenty years with no problems and pretty darn accurate. Only stopped using it because I am a darksider and switched to Autometer gauges.
