Truck's broke...how bad is it?

Just when I was bragging I'd not put a scratch on my truck with all that rock in the bed, humble pie was being baked in the mind of a new employee.

He saw that the tailgate was open and decided to just shut it -- with the rock still filling the gap between the bed and the tailgate.

Before I could get the Noooooo! out of my mouth, the right side of the tailgate fell off in his hands. Luckily we got it back in and I've been riding around like this today...but at some point soon I need it fixed.

Any idea what this is going to cost me?

A 75 cent hose clamp. It will fix it and make it theft proof too.

Was this your employee, or the rock yard's?

If it was your employee, you can probably replace the hinge/pivot point for less than $100. If it was the rock yard's employee, it shouldn't cost you anything...

I will do that for sure until I can get a permanent fix. I like your forum name...from Andy Griffith, right?

To replace the metal socket and bushing, about $40 for parts.

Update: I took it to the local Ford dealership and they got a technician to come look at it. The technician said that notch is supposed to be there...mine is just a little bigger. He said it's safe and not to worry about it.

That said, I'm always up for a good mod...

Thanks, but, actually my tailgate is already dampened. I guess I was thinking the mod was a better version, but it isn't as far as I can tell.
