Question on Dually/Single Rear Wheel

We have a 1996 F-350 diesel Dually (hey, who knew it's a classic - we just thought it a workhorse!). We have a problem with corrosion on the rear wheels, and a major vibration that just started (we think we threw a weight on one of the rear tires. We have looked up instructions online for dealing with the corrosion (sanding, re-clear-coating), so while tedious, we know we can do this. We also have a line on getting some DynaBeads for balancing to deal with the vibration. However, we have a two-worker family with a son going to the local college, and not enough vehicles for everyone. Is it possible to remove two of the rear wheels to work on and just run the truck as if it were a single-rear-wheel vehicle? We are only talking temporary and not carrying any sort of load or towing while doing this, just needing a running vehicle to get around town while we do the work on the wheels. Are there safety issues, or other issues we may not have considered? Thanks for any feedback you can give.

Welcome to FTE! I don't think you should have any safety issues with running just one rear tire on each side- provided you aren't loading beyond what one wheel can carry. The lug nuts should still work with a single wheel. It may look a bit odd, but I think you should be fine.

On edit- you could probably run a tire from a srw truck too so you could work on all 4 at the same time.

Thanks. We need to use the existing wheels/tires because we don't have a spare set of wheels from a srw truck! The plan is, remove the outer wheels to work on them, running on the inner wheels. Then replace the inner wheels with the restored wheels and run on them singly while we work on the other ones, finally putting the last ones back as the outer wheels so it's dually again.
