First you need to find out which brand of axle it has. 1985 was a transition year. If the diff cover has a fill plug, it's a Dana. If there's a fill plug on the diff case itself, it's a Sterling.
Next you need to find out the gear ratio. There may be a tag on one of the diff cover bolts. There's also an AXLE code on the door jamb sticker.
Same driveline as the big-block gassers, BTW, so don't worry about the "new to diesels" part. Doesn't apply here.
