460 VIN number location

I own a 1975 F-250 and I've just got my truck a month ago and doing more research on it. But since it has a 460 it's obviously isn't the original engine and I would like to know the engines year is. Any advise will be much appreciated.

No it's still has the VIN number for the original engine which is Y and I know for sure I have a 460 not a 360 which was the original engine.

You want to know what year engine you have, right? Check for casting codes and the date code. Casting codes tell what year that version of the block or heads is, and date code on the block is the actual casting date.

Casting codes are on the sides of the block, the date code is in the lifter gallery, see picture in post 3:

This is what I found looks like 4A177142 and I'm not sure is that is a U or a O at the bottom left corner.

OK those numbers may be part of the VIN but won't tell you what you want to know.

The date code in the valley tells you when the block was cast.

The casting codes on the sides of the block tell you what revision and earliest possible date the block was used. Later revisions were used for several model years if not all the way through the end of production.

Other than the general curiosity, what is it you are trying to figure out via the date of the engine? Since it is a transplant, several things could have changed vs. the OEM configuration. That is part of the joy of owning an older vehicle with a transplant.

I'm curious the year the previous owner decided to put in it.

This will also help me with what parts I will need for it the casting code on the side of the block is D1VE-A2B.

Casting codes here. Note multiple pages, cylinder head info and a "how to read" section as well.

As far as parts, you will probably have to just make careful note of what you take off and replace it with the identical item. That block was used in several production years.

D1VE-A2B or D1VE-6015-A2B:

1971/73 Ford/Merc Passenger Car 429 / 1971/78 Lincoln/Continental Marks 460 / 1972/76 Thunderbird 460 / 1973/78 F100/350 460 / 1975/78 E250/350 460 / Some 1979 F150/350 & E250/350 460.

No 460's in F100's after 1976, no 460's in cars after 1978.
