Manual Transmission stuck in first

Manual Transmission stuck in first
Like the title says my 88 Ranger is stuck in first gear. So, as in life I can no longer go backwards (I also can't go more than 30 mph).
I had the clutch replaced 10K miles ago. The transmission seemed to be OK and has plenty of fluid. This problem happened suddenly. I was trying to shift from first to reverse. The shift lever went into neutral, but would not go into reverse. When I released the clutch pedal the truck stalled. I can start the truck with the clutch pedal depressed and I can drive in first gear.
Has anyone run into something similar? I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to diagnose the problem without dropping the tranny? The clutch fluid reservoir is full and the slave cylinder was replaced with the clutch.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

WOW!! 1988 Ranger.......I bought a Ranger S brand new IN '88
Anyway, Is it possible that the shifter itself is worn out or loose?
I'm not real familliar with these types of shifters but theres bound to be something in them that can wear out......may be a simple bushing?
I think I'd remove the shifter itself-should be easy to do from inside the cab and have a look....

^+1 on opening the top side shifter up to have a look-see inside for mischief.
Have a TSB read here to see if this kind of problem sounds familiar. http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/...adPdf?id=31521
Then maybe have a look here at this pictorial TSB on modified assy instructions for your tranny, to see if anything looks to be broken, or out of place with the shifter or shift rails, forks, syncros, ect & let us know what you find. http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/...adPdf?id=32517

When he started this thread, answers are "E" mailed to his address, so all he has to do is check his in mailbox, to open & read a posted reply. So, maybe he's busy finding out what's wrong & will post an update on how the trouble shoot is going, for curious minds that would like to know???

I had similar problem few weeks ago. Parked uphill and think oil leaked out the back seal. Truck jerked and wouldn't shift (shifter jumped up and down). I got it 20 miles home but next day only 1 gear. Maybe 1st but might be 2nd. If I went to reverse the truck stalled like it was crossgeared. In neutral it still went forward. I drove a little ways but then it locked completely down. Pulled the trans out and top off. The shaft or a gear on it is frozen. can't turn front or back shaft no matter where shifter is. I have 89 ranger 2.9L mt5sp reg cab 4x2. VIN 1FTCR10T7KUC02378 trans code on door M, sticker on trans reads E97A EA 730180. Dunno if Ford M5OD or Toyo/Mazda. Starter is on drivers side. Salvage yards only ask if Toyo/Mazda or Mitsubishi. No removable clutch housing or oil pan so I don't think it's a Mitsu. Or repairable considering the truck's worth. Haven't found one in 200 miles yet. Doubt I helped anyone yet either. Just trying to id my trans to look for 1 online
