All any intelligent person does when you mention "California" is roll their eyes. The land of nut jobs.

Born there 10/18/52. Been back many times in times gone by the climb in Yosemite( love Tuolumne meadows) love the climate and anywhere away from the cities. But you have to work somewhere. I'll stick to the Blue Ridge Mountains and Upstate NY(Adirondacks).

IMO .. The most scenic drive in the US:

I've driven all of the Blue Ridge Parkway (north & south) from Front Royal to Cherokee, except the section from Natural Bridge to Boone (it was closed all three times I attempted to drive it).

When I was in upstate NY, my gal pal said she wanted to visit the Jello Museum in LeRoy. I said that's just fine with me, as long as I can visit the Pierce-Arrow Museum in Buffalo. She hesitated a bit, then said OK

However, I was planing to visit the Pierce-Arrow Museum before we left LA LA Land, whether she liked it or not!

btw: I seem to recall that on one of our trips (we've been to NC/VA 3 times over the years), that we stayed at a time share in Massanutten.

That's where we live, Massanutten. Skyline drive and Blue Ridge Parkway come together a few miles south in Waynesboro.BRP is a much better drive than the Skyline, free and not traveled much, few colors seekers in the fall but not like the Skyline.

I made mention of Massanutten typing btw after I noticed it in your location. But I forgot about Skyline Drive that's north of the BRP

Section between Natural Bridge and Boone that has been closed for years: After being unable to drive it the third time we were there (there was a detour, but ...), I asked a Ranger why it hadn't been repaired.

He said it all has to do the lack of funds. We cannot afford to fix it now and it will take us several years to fix it once we get the funds.

I said that's a poor excuse, as the BRP was FDR's idea, and much of it was constructed during the Depression.

If FDR found the money to construct it, why the hell can't you find the money to fix a small section of it? He said he didn't know and was unaware of FDR's involvement.

Believe that section is open now except 10pm to 6am

Hmmm, driving at night, that reminds me of this:

Early in the morning, before dawn, while rounding a corner while driving south bound on the BRP just north of Asheville, fog appeared, it was so thick that I pulled over and waited for it to lift.

An hour went by, then two. The gal pal was mad and getting madder by the minute, she sat there fuming.

I said...it could be worse, just think if you had to "see a man about a horse!"

Back in the 1970s, my Grandfather told me that when God created the Earth he lifted up the east coast and all the fruits and nuts rolled west. As a kid I didn't pay much attention to that statement, but I'm appreciating his view point more today.

"God created the Earth he lifted up the east coast and all the fruits and nuts rolled west."

This could be interpreted many different ways.

I thought he raised the middle and all the nuts rolled toward the east and west edges?

Nuts float though, and I think they all settled in the Middle East.
