2008 F250 stepping down to 17" wheels

I'm looking to dress up my rig with new wheels and tires... I"m considering going down to 17" wheels from the stock 18" (the only other stock option was 20").

The reason being: There seems to be more size options in 17, and both wheels and tires and the cost seems to be about about 20% less, at minimum.

Does anyone have a 2008+ with a 17" wheel setup (Pics would be great)?

Also, are there any mechanical reasons I shouldn't do this (will the narrower rim not clear something)?

Thanks,
Scott

I know at some point 18" became standard because brakes wouldn't fit in the 17, not sure if it was 08, or 11. Make sure they'll fit

I made a post a while back on going to a nicer stock aluminum 17" from Ford. A lot of guys said to look for the 18's because there is a lot more tire sizes and brands available in 18's

Not true. My '16 came stock with 17's. I know that with 11-16's, the clearance between SOME aftermarket wheels and the caliper is so close, running stick on balancing weights can be an issue. I don't know if this is the case for 8-10.

I personally like 17's. The tire looks bigger, and you get more cushion between your wheel and the road, making for a better ride. Cheaper tires is a bonus. Unfortunately, I had to go with 18's to get an e rated tire in a 37x12.50.

Ron is right, 17's do fit and are still the factory wheel on the 2017 SD. I ran 17's on my 2016 and I can say that the clearance was very close. I ran American Racing 17x8.5 "0" offset. Each wheel is a little different and depending on the offset and thickness of the alloy will make you anywhere from real close to just enough clearance for comfort.

Maybe 17" steel, but there was a guy buying a 16 at my dealer who wanted to keep the cast aluminum 17's on his trade, and they wouldn't fit. At some point the brakes got bigger.

Factory wheels are cast aluminum. I'm not saying there aren't some aftermarket 17" wheels that may have some fitment issues, but many have ran aftermarket 17" wheels on them. He may have been rubbing his stick on weights. Are you 100% sure he wasn't trying to keep 16" wheels?

Thanks for the info guys, it seems like the answer is that I'm "probably" okay.

Perhaps I'll do some measuring and see how much clearance I have currently.
