New Guy, with huge project, 54 F600

Hi everyone,

Im brand new to the site, but not to brand new to 50's Ford Trucks, and pretty darn good with restorations. I've decided to do mobile hydro-sandblasting business and, decided to get a classic Ford truck to use as the mobile truck. I went to an old classic heavy truck junk yard not to far away and chose 3 trucks as candidates. A 49 Ford Coe, 50 Ford F6 Pumper and a 54 Ford F600. The condition and price was right on the 54. Heres the catch, my goal is to re-power the truck with an engine on hand for now, a 71 Buick 350 or a 2001 Ford 4.2 v6. Why, because I have them on hand. The idea is to have the truck ready to roll for the spring. The 54 has the 239 v8 Y block, and what appears to be a 4 speed transmission with a separate overdrive gear and a 2 speed rear axle. The 2 speed rear axle, and length of the drive shaft combined with the donor engines only having Auto Transmissions, means it will be deep mod to use the lot. My question to you all, and I pray you can help, is there an adapter plate out there that can mate the 350 to the transmission? I believe its a Borg Warner t98, and if so it was mated to that engine before in the AMC Jeep Wagoneers, however we all know how easy things can be confused online. Please help. Thanks so much.

The shift pattern is

2 OD R
3 4 1 (this is a new pattern for me.)

If that truck came with an OD factory, that is incredibly uncommon. Most of those large trucks came with direct drives.

Welcome to FTE! Best place around for old Ford trucks.
My T98 sure doesn't have that shift pattern, but with the overdrive and 2 speed axle, no telling.
We love pictures. They will also help our experts give better info. People like me just love pictures.
Save that 239. If I was closer, I could try to talk you out of it. (If it's not a boat anchor) The water pump isn't made any more and is different than the newer Y-block water pumps.

The trans is the 5 speed OD look at the vin tag on the glove box door and it will say 5OD in the trans spot on the tag
very rare and hard to find. Great combo though especially with the 2 speed. Makes the 239 run easily

Welcome to FTE.

Just wondering why get rid of the 239? I'm assuming you won't put tons of miles on the 54 and it's already in there and could be running with minimal effort.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I wouldn't really get rid of the engine, mainly put it on the stand and rebuild it, and keep it pristine for the truck for whenever I go to sell it. The truck will be used pretty steadily every day (fingers crossed) so i don't want to harm that motor with that kind of use. Do you guys know what transmission this is? The other option I have is to have the drive shaft shortened. It is a possibility to mount the replacement engine and transmission behind the cab between the frame rails as well. That way no motor mounts wouldn't be harmed, and when removed for complete restoration, the mounts behind the cab on the frame could be hidden or removed and hidden from view. I really want to be able to use the 2 speed rear end, especially if I have a customers car on the back. It just seems silly to have an auto yoked up to the driveshaft and not be able to use the high and low. At least I cant see doing so, since the power train is all a series. At the moment, the truck is in the back of the junk yard and sunk in pretty good making it almost impossible to crawl under and get the numbers off of it.

rear axle should be an Eaton 1350 two speed, most common gear set is 6.20 in high range, and 30% for low.

Bingo! If it's an early model it will have synchro's in 4th & 5th. Later models will have synchro's in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

And welcome to FTE!

What year Jeep Wagoneer is this from? A Wagoneer with a T98 would have to be a 60s era. 2WD models were discontinued after 1967. It is a rare bird even before that. In 1968-71 all Wagoneers used the 350 Buick engine. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Wagoneer_(SJ).

I read it was 70's Wagoneers that had the t98 with the 350. However it turned out to be an outlier. I've been looking through Clark Transmissions but haven't found any pictures online of a shift pattern like this one. I'll keep digging until the trucks pulled out lol. Thanks for the welcomes.

if you're going to not use the trans, I have a use for the shift ****. All three of the clarks that are in family members trucks need that ****. (I could also use the trans to repair one in a 66 f350 with a 6.354 perkins diesel and a sterling 10.25 rear end. it ate the input bearing)

Igfuller I do really want to use the transmission, but right now I'm just looking at cost's and if there is a kit available to put a different engine to that trans. However, I haven't made a casting in a while (sorry, Engineering student here). If I make plastic resin duplicate's of the shift *** this fall, would you like me to send you a few in the mail? I can imagine these cannot be purchased anymore easily, and I will most likely be pouring castings to remake the indicator lenses as well. Might as well make another rubber mold just for fun help a fellow Classic Ford Fan out.

There is no "kit" that I am aware of, but, IIRC, two of the bolts line up with the T98A bell housing pattern, and the center is the same. So, with a little drilling and fiddling, the bell housing can be changed to just about any pattern engine. Clutch spline is 1 3/8's inch ten spline (I think) its bigger than the smaller truck stuff. At a minimum you'd need to change out the disc to fit. They are good transmissions, just have gotten hard to find parts for them.
