Is this SOP for a stealership ?

I got an estimate of $ 300.00 to replace a leaking power steering hose on my 07 F150. I took in in Friday to my local dealer and he calls me after I drop it off and says the hose is rusted on and that if they try and remove it another hose and the pump may break.

He wants me to agree I will assume liability for the additional parts and labor if they break at an estimated total of $1100.

He did not have a pump and other hose in stock and says I must pay for them before they order them. I ask what happens if you don't need them - he says I will not get a refund as Ford does not take parts back.

My only other option is to have them try to take the bad hose off first, and then wait 3 days with no vehicle for them to get the other parts if needed.

Needless to say I am going elsewhere.

Go somewhere else. To say that they need to order parts, in advance, just in case, but stick you with the unneeded parts is ridiculous. Is the dealer the only mechanic in your area? There are no special tools needed to replace P/S lines. Most any shop should be able to fix it, and for cheaper than the dealer.

Checking in your area for a hydraulic hose maker and have one made for it yourself is an option I have used often. Big rig spots usually have hose guys close by too.

I've had them make me a 6'6" stainless 5/16" hose with fittings for 25% of what they sell for anywhere else.
