Question: procedure for replacing clutch bracket 1991 F250

Hi, all.

This site saved my bacon a couple times already and I am a newbie. My latest question: I am replacing the clutch bracket in a 1991 F250. Mine has that typical oval worn hole on the lever end of the cross shaft hole in the bracket. I found several explanations of the process but one thing that is not clear to me is whether I need to remove the steering column or can I just loosen it? Is there enough room up there to wiggle it out and the replacement in?

While I am here, should I replace the bushings? The ones on there look fine but are probably original. They are not expensive, but is it worth breaking the system apart? And what kind of grease should I use?

Thanks, Eric
