Metal shavings in fuel filter opinions

Changed my filters and this was in the bottom of the filter housing. I looked on the pleats and down in the center didn't find anything. Went to two Ford diesel techs one said is was the hpfp and should do the the whole fuel system. The other said if the hpfp was coming apart the shaving would not be in the bottom of bowl and to check the filter again in 5k miles. No check engine light, drives great, no other problems. Thanks in advance.

No experience with your problem but I tend to agree with the second tech. If there is a problem, it will manifest itself. For now, a new filter is cheap compared to a new fuel system. I would check the filter in 5,000 miles and see what is in the filter.

Ford has a Powerstroke Diesel Fuel Injection Contamination Kit, p/n EC3Z-9B246-A. Cost is about $4,000 plus $1500 core charge. You would also need to drop the tank for cleaning and maybe even change the pump in the tank.

This kit is plus shipping.

So, drive it for 5,000 miles and see if there is a problem. $60 for a filter is cheaper than the kit.

Thanks just strokin. We talked about the kit and the amount of labor hours. Ouch. I'm going to drive it and see what happens.

It hard to believe a part this big came from the CP4 HPFP, go to the injectors via small fuel lines, and down the return fuel line (again small fuel lines)? And to top it off the truck still runs normal.

I would say most likely this Foreign Object Debris (FOD) came from the gas station diesel pump (supplier) and the primary fuel filter did it's job.

Troy, you're referring to the metal shavings on the end of the magnet, right?

Hard to tell in pictures, but some of those shavings/pieces do look relatively big.

Troy- the shavings are small. The magnet that is in pics is smaller than a dime.
Iynmor- I only fill up at the big rig fuel islands because i always have a trailer. The larger nozzle fights me some times but I always win, lol. So yes maybe a little man handling.

As others have stated I would check the filter again in a few thousand miles cheap insurance. Odds are you pick that up from the station I remember one Citgo station the young guy told me they bypassed the filters because people were complaining about how slow they pumped I laughed and told him that's because they needed to be changed either full of water or filth totally true story LOL take care

Is there a magnet from the factory in the bottom of the fuel filter bowl? I guess I need to pay more attention.

OK now I understand... I honestly can't say what this FOD is from. If it were me I would continue to run the truck and check/change the fuel filters say 3k miles or less and inspect them.

What is the status of the warrenty?

If you have warranty and the system show no signs of rust, ford will warranty it.

I "think" soft metal in the pump is aluminum. Which would not stick to a magnet. That would most likely be the metal you would see coming from the pump.

It could take a while to push all stuff from the take to the main filter. Keep a eye on your fuel rail pressure

I was going to say the same thing, wouldn't the foreign debris be non magnetic?

F350-6 No there isn't a magnet in the bowl, its one i used to get the specs.
I am going to check filters again in 3k or 5k just to see.
donovan Luckily i have 7yr 200k warranty. currently have 140k. Dealer showed me pics of sensors "Detroit" looks for and if any signs of rust then im s.o.l.
ruschejj I also agree that the shavings would be aluminium and not be magnetic.
Thanks to everyone. I will post pics of next filter change.

Got a couple questions - what's CP4 HPFP? Just so I have this right - the "brass" looking thing is the magnet you used to get the shavings out of the fuel filter housing? Which housing were the shavings in - the one from the filter mounted to the frame or the one on top of the engine?

HPFP= high pressure fuel pump. Yes the brass is on magnet. Housing on the frame under the truck.
