2012 5.0 getting about 13 mpg other saying they get 17 mpg

The guys getting 17, or even 22 like some claim, are in neutral rolling down a mountain with the wind to their backs.
The truth is that these trucks are usually on the low end of of the window sticker. I'm getting 15.5 average in mine, doing a mix of city and highway. Window sticker said 15 city/19 highway. I've never ever seen 19 in my life, even on a highway trip.
If I tow heavy, I get about 10-12.

My 2010 generally ran in the 16.8-17.2 range with mixed city/hwy driving. I live in rolling hill country and am a big user of the cruise control. My commute is about 75% open hwy so that doesn't hurt either. IMHO there's just way too many variables to compare vehicles on the web but expecting something other than the bottom of the sticker-stated mileage isn't unreasonable.

My little experiments showed exactly that. We have a station near me that has "up to 10%", 15% and E85. One- as the alcohol content goes up, the price goes down because, Two- the fuel mileage goes down. I average high 16s with 10%, mid-to-high 15 with 15%, and near 13 with E85. Another station across town has "alcohol free" and you pay out the nose for it but using it on a US Hwy 55-60 mph trip I can get slightly over 21 mpg.

I had a 2012 screw FX4 bought new. 5.0 and 3.73's. I live in WV- so moderate hills.
I drove it for a year completely stock. In that year, my average mpg was 16.6. Best mpg was a trip to Myrtle beach SC- about 450 miles one way.
On that trip, it returned an honest- hand calculated 21.9 mpg.
I later leveled it with 34" Trail Grapplers and on an uncorrected speedo, the display settled in at 12.5 mpg. Running E85 showed 11.4.
It developed the engine knock so I put the stock tires on it for a week going back and forth to the dealer and the mpg went back to mid 16's. Best mpg truck I've owned. And truck was really quick. Ended up trading on a loaded 14 Screw FX4 but with EB and 3.55's.
For 1500 miles, it's average was 14.4 mpg in the exact drive the 5.0 was at 16.6. Ended up having a major trans issue and subsequent dealer shenanigans had me so mad I traded it on a 16 Tundra Crewmax.
Yeah. I know.
It averaged 12.4 mpg and it lasted 4 months. Didn't like it. Sold it back to the dealer within $500 of payoff. Wrote the check and handed the keys to them.
Bought a really nice used 24v 2nd gen Cummins and drove it for a few months and sold it to a coworker for a killer profit. It's best average was 14.4 mpg. Had a cai, 5" exhaust, and mild Superchips programmer.
Now I'm driving a 13 Raptor. It is awesome.
Mpg is upper 12's to low 13's. Great power, sound, etc.
So, after all this rambling, I'd say of all these examples, the 12 5.0 was my favorite all around powertrain. Best mpg by far of all my trucks and likely the fastest. Pulled hard against a coworkers regular cab Hemi. Maybe it was a freak but it was like a 4x4 mustang. The 3.73's made it perfect. My EB truck was a dud. Just never felt quick. Had a 5.0 truck pull away from me on an entrance ramp. A coworkers 16 Silverado with a 5.3 and 3.08's give me fits. I know it was a dud because the wife has a 15 Expedition with the EB and it's stout. Over 20 mpg on a trip too.
Sorry for the long winded post- got away from me.
