I have a 1958 Custom Cab Shortbed, and it has a straight six in it, my grandfather swears its a 282ci, but I can find very little info on it, was there something wrong with this engine or are we mistaken on the ci? can anyone hook me up with specs/possibilities? is it tunable at all?

Prior to the 1965 300 I6 the biggest straight six was a 262, but I believe that was mainly in big trucks and only saw light truck use in '64, though they could have been put in some earlier ones. More likely it would be a 223 straight six. Look at this site and see if you can match you engine to the ones depicted:
