Emissions questions

recently purchased a 84 f250 4.9 4 speed without overdrive. Trying to figure out what's left, if anything of the emissions system. I understand the truck has a feedback carb. Can I fit a pre 83 carb with a manual choke to the truck? Truck runs good however my current choke is a long wooden pole that depresses the the pedal. Not a daily driver however it is going to get cold in the northeast soon!

What is on there does not appear to be a feed back carb.
What does stand out is there is no provision to feed fresh air for the PCV system.
You need to install a breather type oil cap.

The EGR spacer plate is no longer functional so it could go and a phenolic spacer could be installed in it's place.

Since you are now totally non emissions a swap to an early 70's carb for the 300 Six would be a good idea.

This guy would fit the bill nicely

Other than that is just cleaning up the lose hose ends and you should be good to go.

Someone has already swapped the distributor if it originally had the computer system. On the radiator sticker see if it says "EECIV" on it anywhere. That was the computer system it would originally have had if it came with one.

You have the old style dist like I said, so you are good to go there. If you do not have any wiring plugs or wires coming out of strange places on the carb, it may have been swapped too. You can rebuild and convert that carb to manual choke with a kit from the store.

Both guys are right it looks like someone has done all the work to ditch the computer.
If the truck runs good and just the choke not working as it should as said rebuild the carb you have and swap to a man. choke.

The oil fill cap has a 90 deg fitting with a red cap. Is this a red cap a plug? If so remove the plug as this is the fresh filter air inlet for the PVC system. Just add a hose with some type of air filter.

You do not have a feedback Carb, just add a manual choke cap conversion if the choke is not working. This would be the cheapest and fastest fix for the choke.

Based on the photos this engine was originally a EEC IV.

Since you are concerned with cold weather operation, I believe you might want to look for an original air cleaner which will take advantage of warm air [exhaust manifold provided] to warm the incoming air to the carburetor. That will greatly enhance the running characteristics.

Will help but it's really only during warm that it may make a differance there is little risk of carb icing on 300's with the carb and intake parked on the exhaust manifold. It's one of those things try it and if it's a problem then do something about it.
