Will a C4 transmission bolt to 292 engine

will a C4 automatic transmission off a 289 engine bolt to a 292 engine? Wanting to swap out my 3 speed to an automatic. If the C4 won't work, what transmission will?

1961/64 F100/350's (except 1961 F100 223 I-6) came with the FX Cruise-O-Matic.

C4 introduced in misc. 1964 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars with 200 I-6 & 260/289. Introduced in 1965 F100/250 with 240/300 I-6 engines, F350 with 240 I-6.

What transmission would work best with the 292?

For all intents and purposes, they should all work about equally as well.

The adapter will give you many more options but very likely at a higher cost.

A Y-Block truck automatic will be easiest to fit since it was designed for the task.

From a gearing standpoint, for street use only a modern automatic overdrive will get you something that is much more beneficial but that will only come into play for highway use.

For racing, other transmissions could be better because of reduced parasitic loss and parts availability, although factory Y Block transmissions can be made to support quite a bit of power.

So like many things, it boils down to your goals.

I would rather not use the adapter kit. But if I use a 292 y block is there a transmission that will bolt up without the adapter?

Yes, NumberDummy has already told you which is correct for '61-'64.

I think automatics were available for the earlier trucks, as well and they may be just as easy to fit in a '64.

If you decide FOM or FX, you need to find a 61/ COM main case as it will have the DUAL RANGE feature and a vacuum modulator valve as opposed to the earlier TV (throttle valve) setup.

Ideal would be a 68/ FMX. That is where FORD redesigned the trans putting the heavier MX internals into a FX case by eliminating the rear pump. It was also available SELECT-SHIFT as were a few 1967 FX models.
