Thinking of buying a ZF6 swapped truck? Please share your thoughts!
Hey guys,
I know I'm a ghost around here but I do still exist.
Without going into any of my long stories, I'm looking at buy this truck locally in Alaska. It is ZF6 swapped and the owner bought it from the guy who did the swap. Based on general mods, current owner knowledge, and what I've heard it seems to be in pretty good shape.
I'm going to fly to him and take a look at it but I was wondering if everyone could look over the pictures and tell me what they think or what they would be weary of?
I'd really appreciate it.
I'm still hanging onto Mugly but this is my scenario.
I have several runs down the Alaskan highway planned next year. To bring her up to speed, I'd need to spend 3 to 4,000 not including a fresh transmission to insure long distance reliability.
At the price I can get this truck for, I'm improving every category of Mugly that I wish to improve on, while also having a second truck.
Example of what I like.
Long bed
F350 towing rating
Bigger gas tank
2.5 BDS lift
injectors, turbo
Fewer things to go wrong in a healthy manual than a high mileage auto.
King ranch seats, so heated seats up front and I think the rear seats will fold up, which will be nice for hauling my dogs.
Improved lighting.
Stereo system, back up camera when the girlfriend drives it in town. (She is petite)
Recently replaced things like alternator, water pump, seals etc.
I can't Mugly close to this and reliable for the price he is willing to sell it to me. I'm 90% sold on it unless there are some huge things I don't know about the ZF6 transmission and other parts listed.
It just seems like a logical choice to me.

I love the ZF6 in my truck and would not go to an automatic for most reasons.
Since the PCM is still from an automatic and the wiring harness is "set in neutral", I assume that the 4x4 is working properly and as intended. That is something I would check for sure.
Does he know which Southbend clutch is in the truck, it does make a difference.
Are the up-pipes leaking and just have not been replaced with the spare set listed in the ad?
Why were the "new injector" o-rings installed if the truck has Swamps 175/146 injectors in it? Unless he is saying that the Swamps injectors came with new o-rings, I would find that a bit strange and worth a question.
If those are recent pictures, it looks good at face value.
I would also remove the intake tube on the turbo and see what condition the compressor wheel is in. Take a look around in the valley and underneath for anything odd or out of place.

Man, I love this forum.
The young airmen that owns it bought himself a new 6.7 F 250. Already went and picked it up, he originally put this up for sale and then took it down. Then he decided he was set on something new. Having now bought a new truck, he doesn't need this one. He is expecting his first kid soon and I think he and the wife both wanted newer vehicles. Recently sold his mint condition 2000 GT which was all set up for road racing. It was a nice vehicle and he sold it on a deal as well. That is where I began to get a good vibe from him. He was very detailed in answering all my questions and knows enough to answer specifics.
I'll ask him a couple questions this morning.
He bought the truck with most of the mods, didn't do the work himself. He did have a leak in the valley of the motor which sent him in all directions replacing almost every single o-ring he could find.
What is the deal on South Bend clutches? Certain ones to be upset with?

I certainly know how those young Airman can be, I was one way, way, way back...
As for the SouthBend clutch, there is not a problem with them, but based on the use and power output of the truck there should be considerations in which clutch is installed. Too aggressive of a clutch and you will not be happy with it or how it performs. Too light of a clutch and it will not be a good fit either as it will slip more.
Not sure if this link will work properly, but this is a parts list from SB.
South Bend Clutch
I purchased and had installed the 1939OHD which is not a crazy application, but just about right for my goal of 385-400 HP with a bit more surface area on the disc for heavy towing applications.
Below is a link to pictures and a video of how I found out I had a bad clutch chatter and hot spots on the flywheel.

The new SB clutch is smooth as glass and I am glad I selected the one I did.

Also, in the pictures below you can see the difference in the surface area of the clutch. This is why I was saying which clutch was installed does make a bit of a difference as to how the truck will perform as a daily driver and/or the longevity or expected life of the clutch.

I do, although sometimes what I know in my head and what is actual fact are two different things.
I agree with the words Fat Diesel has said. A lot of these guys were very valuable to me when I was diagnosing the problems I was having with my truck. After such a long time of dealing with it and installing a lot of products and replacement parts, these guys nailed it with a simple video.
Great information here and the truck appears to be a good deal.

Thank you for all the insight guys. I'm pretty set on it unless I find some alarming issues, I hope to be picking it up soon.
Feeling very fortunate, as a Dynatrac Free Spin kit popped up locally for 1,200 bucks, with the hub upgrade. The wallet just hates me, but I hate it too apparently.
