Question Selector Valve conversion to Manual Valve

I have a 1987 F250 with a non-functioning" Dual Function Reservoir" part #9B263, commonly known as a Selector Valve. This plastic "octopus" has six ports and wiring designed to switch the fuel guage from the rear to front and vise versa. I want to convert this abomination to a simple valve that I can switch on the floor of my truck. Why are there six ports on my current switch? How many ports do I really need and how can I switch the electronics from the tanks to the fuel guage? Do I need to add an electric fuel pump?

Just replace it and be done for the foreseeable future. Assuming you have the carb'd 460 and the original part is E7TB-9F271-AA then replace it with 6C3Z-9189-A. Bolts right on and works normally. $323 from fordpartsworld.com. I just did one.
