Frame bump stops

Long story short. First attempt to use my 3rd party "premium" extended warranty didn't cover the worn frame bump stops. Dealer says they are the reason for a hard bang I'm hearing when running over rougher roads. I noticed it not long ago.

Dealer wants $2,300 to replace them all...I'm assuming.

My dad recalled changing those out himself on his 2001 Excursion (7.3 PSD). How hard would it be to do that myself on a 6.4? Is a lift required? I hope this is something I could do. Thoughts?

I can't imagine it would be that hard. I think you could use the stock jack to raise it a bit if required. There seems to be plenty of instructions on how to replace bump stomps online. $2300 seems crazy high. You might also check with 4x4 shops in your area with non-OEM bump stops.

Thanks for that Jim and I hope you're right. Supposedly there are 8 of them on our trucks. Dealer said it was a cab-off procedure to do the work. Hell they may have taken the bed off as well. I really hope I can do this myself.

8, dont know about that...sounds like they are talking about the body mount bushings....on a crew cab there are 8 of them...on 2door and 2door and a half, there are 6 of them.

there are only 4 bump stops on my crew cab. 2 in the front and 2 in the back.

Ah...that makes sense. So what do you think fritz? Are the (4) bump stops something I could do myself? What about the body mount bushings? Either way it sounds like I'm going to be out $800 or so in parts for all of it. I'm thinking the body mount bushings would cost more than the bump stops.

the problem with body mount bushings and bump stops repairs is that these things are always frozen due to rust.

could you or I do it...probally...do we want to...probally not.

you can google the how toos...but the main thing is not to use an impact gun...you need to heat up the heads of the bolts or the nut plates...you have to use the drag loosen method, meaning a big breaker bar with no jerking motion. once you impact these or hit the breaker bar with a mallet, your going to spin your nut plates...then your going to have to get the nut plates welded to the frame so they dont spin. be down this road.

these 8 or 6 bolts for the body bushings could take you days .

I had to make some wooden formers with a slot that I could use to jack up the body a few inches. I used 4 jacks. jacked up one side at a time.

you have to loosen your steering shaft and pull the bolt.

if you have the cash...pay soneone to do it.

if you have plenty of time, tools, and pateints and want to learn how to be a diesl wrench...then yes...its not impossible.

Again, I'd check with a 4x4 shop.

Thanks for that Jim. You're aren't kidding. Spent a decent part of yesterday afternoon drilling out weep holes in a brick community wall. Hopefully it works...if not...I WILL have water in the house...no question.

Can anyone recommend an aftermarket brand? All I know for sure is that the OEM ones are crap and WAY overpriced from Ford.

Pic,

Not saying anything about the diagnosis..............

Can you isolate front back, left rear?

I'm a hardcore believer that this could be a shock that went away on you.

We have four stubs on the truck and You should be able to visibly climb under and look at each one. If they are hanging and you can reach up and give them a tug, I call bull****.

If what your hearing is close to the floor and you can't isolate it........take a short 4x4 and a floor jack and slowly lift the corners as close as you can to each cab mount and carefully inspect the closure.

I really think this is suspension related and not cab body issue.

If your running empty, you have to have a broken spring or your running 23 fat chicks as an uber.

BTW, if it's the stops, don't get a wrench out.

Get a sawz all and hack them at frame level and put in the new.

1 hour, 4 beers (for me) and bolt them in.

You can always run on a quarter tank unloaded without the chicks and be just fine.

:')
