Engine will not shut off when the key is turned off

Hey guys new to the site. I have a 1984 6.9 idi that will not turn off when the key is placed in the off position. Everything on the dash goes off but I still have power to the fss on the ip. My second issue is that my glow plugs don't come on sometimes bit when they do they are stick on. So if anyone has a wireing diagram or can point me in the right direction that would be appreciated. Thanks

There is a sticky on the top of the forum that deals with glow plugs. You have the early style with an '84.

As to not turning off, I would suspect the ignition switch which is located at the base of the steering column.

actually, not shutting off is a sign of a broken ignition actuator. 99% of the time the actuator will fail in a no start position, but sometimes it will fail in a no shut off position.

On steering column if you can see your ignition switch rod pull it towards you if it shuts down adjust ignition switch on column. It has adjustment front to back just went through the same thing. Plus my main wiring shorted out going to the gpm which made my ignition wire hot at all times. The only way to shut engine off was to disconnect power to injector pump.

If the accessories are turning off, the actuator is _probably_ moving the switch properly. No guarantee, however, since there are multiple contacts open/closed in each switch position. It could be opening the accessory contacts, but not the contacts to the FSS circuit.

One other thing to try is to disconnect the GP relay and see if that de-energizes the FSS. Something I've seen reported is that a GPR will sometimes fail internally, and make contact between the large (contact circuit) always-hot terminal and the ignition-triggered small (coil circuit) terminal. This back-feeds power through that small terminal, which is ulltimately tied to the circuit that the FSS is on.
