rain sensing/auto wipers

So i picked up the truck from the dealer yesterday and drove 300+ miles home and it rained the whole way in varying degrees. initially the auto wipers were pretty cool when the ran was so lite the delay was longer than most delayed wipers go. but as the ran became a little harder the auto wipers started varying there speed drastically from just right to delayed wiping with me waiting for the next wipe to see clearly to high speed wiping like it wanted to throw the wipers off the truck. where is the sensor, and is mine off or need adjusting? i thought i would look at the advanced settings today to see if there is a setting to disable the auto sensing until it gets fixed.

thx,

In my experience, what you described is fairly normal. Because of the intensity variation of rain hitting the windshield the wiper rain sensor doesn't always respond as we think it should. There are more settings for the automatic wipers. I don't think there's anything can be done to change the way it works.

The auto wipers on my 2016 F150 worked flawlessly, but mine are identical to yours on my F250. I asked the dealer about it, and he said they were waiting on a software update. I still prefer to leave mine on auto, but not sure why they will not work like the F150.

Agreed, my 16 F150 Lariat auto wipers worked much better than the F250 for some reason. With the 250 they seem to go into high speed much faster than needed.

the rain was consistent when the wipers would change from delayed, to steady wiping, to speed wiping. There was no change in volume or intensity of rain during the wiper speed change episodes.

To you question about where it's located. Top of the windshield in front of the rear view mirror. I made the mistake of having the ignition "on" listening to the radio while washing the truck one day. When the wash wand hit that area, the wipers hit the wand and tossed it. Lesson learned.

Ive got into the habit of shutting mine off all the way when there is no rain because of my wifes fusion, Hers will wipe just do to a change in shadow on the windshield, not good on a dirty window.

Is there any way turn auto sensing off with forscan. I'd rather not have them going crazy.

I think the auto wipers are ridiculously inconsistent and annoying. Though I live in Miami where it monsoons when it rains. I keep the auto turned off. The technology is a waste in my opinion.

Auto wipers are cool, but need improvement. I think adding one or two more additional infrared sensors (maybe one low on drivers side and one low on passenger side) would greatly improve the accuracy. You can still switch the wipers on to a steady speed or fast speed manually. Obviously, all the different hash marks on the wiper control allow you to vary the sensitivity. But in general, mine work somewhat inconsistently as you describe.

You might be able to turn rain sensing wipers off completely in the menus.

Put some RainX on the windshield.

Then, if you are going highway speeds, you barely even need the wipers. The rain sensing feature will not matter as much.

And bugs are easier to wash off.

You can shut the auto feature off in the menus, but you do have to be stopped in order to do it. Usually when it acts up I'm not in the mood to pullover to make the change. Mine worked almost perfectly on my '16 F150 King Ranch, so Ford has the ability to make it work. It baffles me why they can't make them work the same on a F250.

Very true.
