Cam suggestion for 300, 95 F150 (speed density)
hello everyone!
I'll start out by saying, i have too many projects, lol.
I realized the other day that i have three different engine stands, and all three are tied up with different engines, and i need a stand for another project, so maybe it's time to get one of these other projects rolling.
I have my 95 F150, reg cab, shortbox, 2wd, 5 speed. light little truck, ive owned it for half my life, it served me well as a summertime daily driver until the clutch failed. The straight six ran flawlessly the day I pulled it, the only reason i put it on the stand was to give it a re-freshening and fix all the oil leaks it had acquired over the years.
Now, I'm just getting back to it. the bottom end is pretty well done, I just picked up the cylinder head from the machine shop this week. I'm now pondering about looking for a cam for it. No problems with the old cam, just looking for a possible jump in performance, without getting too nutso. I dont tow with it, i rarely haul much of anything, the truck will keep the AC and other amenities, so no, i'm not looking to go heavy towing or drag racing. Just looking for a little more pep, without disturbing things like the computer or overall drivability.
I know if i want to really go fast, theres a shop full of big block beasts to go romp on.
So, a quick search showed me mostly cam suggestions used on carbed applications, does anyone care to chime in on a injected cam suggestion?
thanks in advance,
Lee

I've read a number of threads that said lobe-separation angle (LSA) is most(?) important when picking a cam for speed-density ... and that assumes it's a mild cam in the first place.
Stock LSA is 110. Both intake & exhaust have total duration 268*, duration @ 0.05 192*, lift 0.249.
Here's a picture I found with a breakdown of various cams (I wish I knew who to credit this to):

Since it's speed density, you have to be really careful or you'll throw off the computer.
Your best bet is to call around to various cam manufacturers and tell them what you've got, and they'll let you know what will work with it. Then, from that list, we can help you pick out a cam.
Most performance cams are going to be for a carb'd engine so the EFI selection is a bit more slim.

this is kinda what i was gathering. I'm focusing more on drivability than anything else on this one, so if there is any chance that i'm going to run into issues, id rather just stick with the factory cam. the truck got out of it's own way before just fine.
