Sous, i have the 5w-40 weight full synth. I'll probably be able to run it all winter before i hit 7k miles. With this massive bypass oil filter rated at 15k miles the current plan is to take an oil sample around 8k miles and see if their claims of 15k is doable with this filter and oil combo. All subject to change of course

Well I changed my oil over the weekend, and ended up going with the 5w40 full synthetic. I was gonna buy the 15w40 synthetic, but the 5w40 was actually cheaper on eBay.

The truck does run a tad quieter, not a huge difference, but I can’t hear the constant ticking of the injectors firing like I could with the old 15w40 Dino oil. The classic 7.3 knock is still there, but injectors are quieter. So far no leaks, and hopefully this stuff holds up well.

5w-40 here, 6k miles and still running great. It runs so much quieter. No leaks yet. Good stuff

How many miles are you planning to take it before your next change? Curious if anyone has done an oil analysis with this oil yet.

Our current plan is to run it til March, around 8k miles, almost 5,600 towing the 5th wheel, then see what Blackstone says before we start next year's camping season. We'll either put another 7,500 miles towing on it next year, or change it b4 our big summer trip.
All plans subject to change

After reading over this thread, I'm very interested in trying the 5w40 on my up coming oil change. Truck is scheduled to drive from Alaska to Mexico in the next few months.

Slight follow up for me and the 5w40 synthetic. Filled up the tank today (22 gallons worth) and went to calculate what kinda mpg I got with the new oil. Hand calculated I got 16.5 mpg. This is doing roughly 65% city driving and 35% highway. With Dino oil, I was getting 14.5-15 doing this same kind of driving. I wasn’t expecting this kind of gain, but I’m very happy with it to say the least. Now I need to do some highway driving to see what I get on that.

Also, if my math is correct, I’m probably getting a tad better than 16.5 as I’m running a slightly larger tire (305/70/16) which throws off my odometer a little.

So you are actually getting better than calculated. I think that you would be surprised at how much difference it can make. I had to run one size larger that stock on Mercedes and it made a difference of almost one mile in ten.

I was just contemplating upgrading to synthetic in my faithful 7.3. I'm glad I came across this thread. Triax 5w-40 is only $41.59 for 2.5 gallon currently, with free shipping! I ordered four containers to do a little stock piling. I decided to stay with the Motorcraft filter for now too. I have always thought them to be good filters, but I've never seen one cut open..

Thanks for the good info guys! This site is one of the reasons I keep my old truck!

Pulled the trigger on some 2.5 gallon containers today. Free shipping to Alaska via Amazon! Looking forward to it.
