Save your $400+ and drive it the way Ford engineered it.
As noted, it may seem like it's screaming in the hills and will sometimes drop down into 2nd gear in extremes. But that's what they do. At least the 3.73s anyway.
I just took a 150 mile round trip on the interstate yesterday with no load, no trailer. Driving 70-72 mph most of the time it did high 13's to 14.0 mpg. Local towing of my other 7x18 enclosed business trailer (about 5500# worth) I'm in the 9-10 mpg range. Bringing home an empty 21' PJ 14k tilt bed from PA a couple weeks ago it was in the 11's. About the same when hauling a Bobcat 709 backhoe (attachment only, no skid steer) on the PJ about 120 miles from home.
You must not have been paying much attention (or don't know what to expect) then or got the wrong tunes. MPG is always going be negligible with a tune on a N/A gasser. 5 Star made a bunch of changes that make a big difference. The stock tune is absolutely horrible on the 6.2l, especially the shift strategy. Ford should be embarrassed putting out a truck like that.

OP get the 4.30 gears with the 6.2l. The 6.2l should not even come with 3.73s IMO. Just like the 5.4l and 6.8l trucks should have never came with 3.73s either.

Yeah, I regularly spend that kind of money without "paying attention". For my use I chose an 87 economy and 87 Daily/Tow. Not much at all noticeable from stock.
I had my experiences with it in 2 different trucks. I paid my money, I took my chances. Won't happen again. If your experience was wonderful, then good for you. It doesn't mean that another guy is wrong about his own experience.

I am a manual transmission lover... 50 years worth.

this is the first automatic I find useful.. correct gears at the correct time.... just lockout 6th...

if a tune was available in the 1980's you might have got better fuel mileage towing...
today's engine is at the upper 99 percent of MAX gas mileage.. towing or NOT.

I will say this again

my 1965 Impala SS 409 4 speed. just cruising at 65.. it got 13 miles per gallon.( on 100 octane )
. its NOT a 7,000 pound truck that has a Front of a building, for a noise.

The economy tune does not change much at all. If you drive like an old man (which people whom are soooo concerned about mpg usually do) you probably won't notice much of any difference. So many people are so clueless about tuning and what is going on with the truck, they don't know what they don't know. Sounds like the case here. Tune revisions are available if there is something that needs to be changed.

OMG, good luck with the Ram/GM
Make sure you get the rental car policy thrown in when you're negotiating warranty options

He might have good luck with the new Rams. They seem to have upped their game as is evident on a couple of them that have been flawless in my fleet. The best place to drive a GM after purchase is straight off a cliff. You'll be out less money that way.
