What am I looking at.

1983 F250 351w
This was always hanging by my pedals. But I took out the aftermarket cruise and found it was connected to this..red and purple went to the cruise. Did some research and what I found that it was a stop switch?

Yes, that's a brake light switch, wire color = light green/red stripe (or maybe red dots or hash marks, it depends)

Looks like they tapped into the brake light circuit to signal the cruise control to disengage when the brake pedal was depressed.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em.....

Old Henry would be turning over in his grave at that idea. As I've heard, he was staunchly anti-smoking. He didn't even want the lighter on the dash to be called a "cigarette lighter" or "cigar lighter". He insisted that it be called simply a "lighter".

That switch was only used on trucks with cruise for the cancelling function and was not associated with brake light function. There should be another switch for the brake lights in the firewall, it's about the size and shape of a cigar

I have cruise and only one switch on brake pedal (which looks like switch OP is holding).
Not saying your wrong in your info Deere just that there may/must be other configurations.

Those clamp-on electrical splice connectors aren't factory, somebody did something there in the past.

I haven't looked in the books to find all the different brake light switch variations available from the factory over the years, you can do that if you like.

Beginning with bulbs, their sockets & grounds is a great place to start... and that switch hangin' by the wires is a key component as to why the brake lights don't work but just remember there are different circuits making ALL this stuff work as designed.

I have a short attention span, so maybe I missed this.. but did you reinstall that switch on your brake pedal arm?
When you look at the pedal arm and where the brake booster (or master cylinder) linkage connects, is there a switch there now?

I think you need to install that switch in your first post and then your brake lights will work again. I'll bet someone removed the switch to make those wiring connections and just never reinstalled the switch.
