So for me a 250 + airbags = 350 capability with lower cost. The only way I'd go 350 is if I were going for a dualy which I would only do if I were going to buy a much larger trailer.
If this is your plan the be sure and get the HD 250 with the upgraded rear axle. It'll give you 350 equipment with a 250 sticker to keep registration down.

Yep, you would be correct there.

True for the gas engines. Same transmission for diesels.

I went with the 250. I plan on scoring some 350 vertical badging on Ebay when they become available, next problem.

Turns out here in TX insurance is about the same. But you have a great idea, because I'm going to lift the truck sooner or later.

In fact the same engine and trans is used in the F-450 and maybe even the F-550, or so says the sales droid at the Ford Stealer. So that's just hearsay so far.

Exactly. 250 plus high capacity trailer tow package gets you the M275 which is the same axle as the 350. I'd be fine with the Sterling as well given that there are millions of prior generation single rear 350s running around on that axle towing more than I'd ever want to.

F350 hands down. Been there with buying an F250 and then needing the payload I could only get with an F350. If you ever think you will need more payload etc. just get the F350 and be done with it.
By the way, I will take my 2017 F350 XLT over the 2016 F250 Lariat I had any day.

I have been looking at this same thing...F250 or F350? I tow an 8500# Aisrtream with a tongue weight of 880#'s. NO plan to go any larger and NO plans for a fifth wheel (been there done that). Seems the F250 Gas with the 4.30 is all I really need. Is there much of a difference in the ride? Does the F350 ride a little harsher than the F250 due to the stiffer springs? Not purchasing for 18 months but....doing as much research as I can now.

F-350 - bigger rear spring block
F-350 - 1 extra rear leaf (?)
F-350 - slightly stiffer front coils (optional on 250)
F-350 - slightly bigger center section in rear diff
F-350 - a little more max load capacity
F-250 costs $3k less!

Drivetrains are both the same. Front diffs are the same. Bodies are the same. I can't confirm but suspect the brakes are the same too...
For 2017 F250 and F350 SRW, not quite. Yes, front diffs (axles), bodies, and brakes are the same.

The drivetrains vary:
  • F250 with gas engine is fitted with 6R100 TorqShift G and Ford Sterling rear axle
  • F250 with diesel engine is fitted with 6R140 AT and Ford Sterling rear axle
  • F250 with diesel + HD tow Pkg is fitted with 6R140 AT and Dana M275 rear axle
  • F350 with gas engine is fitted with 6R140 AT and Ford Sterling rear axle
  • F350 with diesel engine is fitted with 6R140 AT and Dana M275 rear axle
  • Gas and diesel engines offer different axle ratio options
Stock F250 gets a three-leaf rear spring pack. Optional camper pkg adds an aux rear spring (total = four). Basic F350 (XL?) and 17" wheels gets a four-leaf rear spring pack, most others get five leaves.

F250 max GVWR is 10K lbs., and is probably "paper limited". Max F350 SRW GVWR is 11,500 lbs. Don't know about the front springs.

My recollection is that comparably equipped, the price difference is quite small.

Registration for a truck with a GVWR of 10K lbs. or less is lower in some areas.

Not a damn thing when it comes to legality, which it seems he wants to bypass. The door sticker is the ticket there, and that's not changing.

In my county of fairfax Va. Personal Property Tax would have been on the 17 350's over 10,000Lbs, 3400.00 first year, No tax break. My 250's 10,000 and under is 694.00 with the Tax relief. Thats 2706.00 per truck. It was a no brainer. That does get lower each year. The badge on the front fender means nothing to me. The 250's make just as much money for me as the 350 would.

Same reason I put a "103" derby cover on my "96" inch Harley. Just keeps people guessing. What's the fun in owning something if you can't play with it?
